Boating Education

Boating Safety Course

Virginia law requires that boaters pass an approved boating safety course.


Personal Watercraft (e.g. Jetski)
All age operators must currently comply.

Motorboats 10 hp and up:
All operators must comply by July 1, 2016.

America’s Boating Course?(ABC) provides you with basic boating knowledge to decide what type and size boat you need, what to do when meeting another boat in a crowded waterway, and how to recognize and handle hazards.? Many boat insurance companies will offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete?America’s Boating Course. And, this course provides a sound basis for continuing your recreational boating education.

  • Boating laws, both federal and state
  • Safety equipment, both required and recommended
  • Finding your way, and adverse conditions
  • Communications
  • Trailering, knots and lines, and water sports topics
  • Optionally, introduction to electronic navigation using paper charts and chartplotters

Advanced Courses

Members of the Mid-Potomac? Sail and Power Squadron can continue their boating education through United States Power Squadrons? advanced courses. Most classes are offered in a classroom format. However, members have also passed courses through self-study followed by a proctored exam.




Seminars are a great way to learn about a specific topic concentrated into a manageable, two-hour commitment.? These focused sessions help you round out your understanding and knowledge of a variety of boating topics.
