What we do

MSPS-trifold-brochureUSPS can help you improve your boating skills, contribute to your community, and enhance your fun both on and off the water.
Owning a power or sail boat is NOT a requirement for membership!

Public Boating Courses
Members of the Mid-Potomac Power Squadron are involved in several civic activities. Most recognizable are the Boating Courses which we conduct for members of the public. Conducted numerous times per year, we provide a classroom environment where “boaters” can gather to increase their skills in boat operation and handling, while meeting others with similar interests. Many lasting friendships have been formed, and valuable experiences shared by those taking our classes. The environment is relaxed and fun, yet there is serious learning taking place.

Vessel Safety Checks

In Spring 2000, the United States Power Squadrons joined with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliaries to develop a new program to provide free safety inspections of boats for the boating public. Our Squadron has been active in implementing this program in our area. We have an on-going training program to qualify our members to conduct free safety inspections. adobe-pdfLook for our members at marinas and local launch ramps this summer.

Updating NOS Navigational Charts
Squadron members throughout USPS take part in cooperative charting. Through this effort, we work in conjunction with the National Ocean Service to update nautical charts and save taxpayers millions of dollars by reporting corrections. We observe and document errors in charts as we navigate the

country?s waterways, and send in reports so that the corrections may be confirmed and included in the next printing of the charts, as well as posted in Notices to Mariners, where applicable.

Encouraging A Safer Boating Environment
Each May, during National Safe Boating Week, we work in conjunction with the Vigrinia Department of Natural Resources, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and others to spread the word about boating education and safe boating practices. Months of planning and coordination of efforts result in a high-profile presence throughout this special week. You?ll see our members along with representatives of all the above organizations, passing out free information packets, conducting demonstrations, providing free safety inspections, etc.

Winter boat shows are always a boost to a boater?s spirits, and squadron members are no exception. You?ll find our booth at the January Fredericksburg Boat Show. We?re there to greet passers-by, hand out informational literature, to encourage participation in our Boating Courses, and to soak up the atmosphere of shiny fiberglass, gleaming chrome, and hot new equipment! Summer can?t be far behind!
