About Us

The Mid-Potomac Sail and Power Squadron is a social, civic, and educational organization dedicated to safe and fun operation of boats on our waterways. Our squadron is one of about 450 squadrons across the country which comprises the United States Power Squadrons (USPS).

Mid-Potomac Sail and Power Squadron is one of the youngest squadrons in District 5 of the United States Power Squadrons (USPS?). District 5 serves the squadrons of Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, DC, eastern Pennsylvania, and southern New Jersey.

Our membership includes sailors, power boaters, fishermen, PWC operators, and even many people who do not currently own a vessel but share our love of the water. You?ll find our members primarily in the Quantico to Colonial Beach area of the Potomac River and adjacent inland areas. e.g./ Spotsylvania, Lake Anna.

Improving our boating skills and safety, and therefore our enjoyment, on the waterways is a primary goal of squadron members. Boating courses for members are taught by experienced instructors who are fellow squadron members. USPS? offers a complete boating education curriculum (Boat handling, Electronics, Navigation, Weather, Cruising, etc.) taught in a classroom-format, with some courses available for home study or on video.

Our dedication to boating education extends into our communities, where we traditionally conduct boating courses for the boating public. Held at various locations in the Stafford area, most classes have an average of 10-15 students. Successful completion of these courses is recognized by most insurance companies with a reduction in your boat insurance rates. These courses are also approved by NASBLA (National Association of State Boating Law Administrators), and meet the educational requirements for boat operation in all states.

In addition, we participate with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary in sponsoring a variety of public awareness activities and a vessel examination program where we provide vessel safety checks free of charge to the general public. You may see our members at the launching ramps, marinas and boat shows as we work to increase awareness of the need for and availability of boating education.

But we?re not all work and no play! Our monthly meeting (second Tuesday of the month) and social activities allow for making and renewing friendships with others who share our love of the water. Our summer months are filled with rendezvous and cruises that take us to familiar harbors and new ports of call.
